Liked: An impressive panoramic view from the top of both mountains, shade in the forest, several fine forest scenes, moss-covered stones (Beech's Trail), no bugs, it is possible to hike a loop trail (visiting Chinese and Beech's mountains in succession before returning to parking lot). Of note: Uneven ground, rocks and roots, unbarricaded drop-offs at some viewpoints, several steep slippery sections, hiking poles and boots are highly recommended. Overnight parking is not allowed at the parking lot, or along the access road. Pleasant, if unremarkable, trails lead to the tops of these mountains, and it is possible to hike a loop trail, visiting both mountains in succession. The views from the tops of Chinese, and, especially, the top of Beech's Mountain are panoramic and impressive, the best we have seen on Quadra Island. We started with hiking the Chinese Mountain Trail. At 700 meters, there is a split to the north and south peaks. Go to the north peak first, if you want to hike a loop trail. From this junction, it is 600 meters to the north peak, and 800 meters to the south peak. After returning to the junction and proceeding to the south peak, we headed to Beech's Mountain, the top of which is 1.7 km away from the south peak of Chinese Mountain. After that, completed the loop and returned to the parking lot by hiking for another 3 km. Thus, it was a total distance of about 7.5 km, with lots of ups and downs. There are no overly steep sections, and this is overall a moderately difficult hike. * All trail distances are based on a GPS odometer and are approximate. 36. Now at 270 meters of Chinese Mountain South Peak Trail.
37. Rather steep at 340 meters.
38. A fine hike through a forest 150 meters later.
39. At 710 meters from the North/South split.
40. At 760 meters, there is yet another split, where a trail to the right leads to a Chinese Mountain South Peak lookover in 80 meters. Coordinates: N 50⁰08.552' W 125⁰15.837'. Elevation: 350 meters.
41. 30 meters past the latest split.
42. 20 meters later.
42-44. And, 80 meters from the split, here is that lookover. Left to right.
45-46. We then returned to this latest junction and proceeded descending down Chinese Mountain South Peak Trail towards its junction with Beech's Mountain Trail. A hundred meters later, another good view. Left to right.
47. 150 meters after the lookover junction.
48. Twenty meters later.
49. At the 215 meter mark.
50. 445 meters past the lookover junction, we are approaching Chinese Mountain South Peak Trail junction with Beech's Mountain.
51. Here it is. Coordinates: N 50⁰08.640' W 125⁰16.024'. Elevation: 300 meters. The options here are to turn right and reach Beech's Mountain Peak in about 1.3 km, or to turn left and complete the loop trail by reaching the parking lot in 1.75 km.
52. Beech's Mountain Trail at 90 meters from the Chinese Mountain junction.
53. At the 150 meter mark.
54. Hiking by a large stone at 410 meters.
55. There are a few short steep climbs on Beech's Mountain Trail. Here is one at 490 meters.
56-57. A good view at 580 meters. Plain and zoomed.
58. Beech's Mountain Trail on Quadra Island, BC at the 660 meter mark.
59. A view at 790 meters.
60. At 860 meters of Beech's Mountain hike.
61. Sixty meters later, another short steep stretch.
62. Followed by another one at 1.13km.
63. More steepness at the 1.19 km mark.
64-67. At 1.29 km from the Chinese Mountain South Peak Trail junction we have reached the top of Beech's Mountain. Coordinates: N 50⁰08.698' W 125⁰16.437'. Elevation: 470 meters. Looking left to right followed by a panorama. On the far right site of photo #66 we can see a very fine Rebecca Spit Marine Provincial Park.
Chinese Mountain and Beech's Mountain are fairly short trails with arguably the most panoramic views on Quadra Island. Highly recommended.
